10:00 a.m., May 25th 1994 Just
1000 feet from Everest's peak and suffering from hypothermia,
Dr. Dennis Brown chose to abort his summit bid. He looked
out over the Himalayas, savored his high point and then
began the difficult descent to Camp 6. At 12:00 p.m., exhausted,
Dennis crawled into his tent and fell asleep. Hours later,
he awoke to his radio. Teammate John McIsaac's weakened
voice filled his tent. 521 feet from the summit John had
turned around. The mountaineer was now suffering from pulmonary
edema, a condition in which fluid collects in the lungs.
John was in trouble...
