Everest's
Khumbu icefall taught Jamie how to manage his fear of falling
into a deep crevasse. Hidden
deep within the Empty Quarter's desert wells a new challenge
awaited Jamie. We descend into the dusty darkness that kills
the light of our lamps. Neither Musallim, nor Ali, nor bin
Ashara is interested in joining us, but Sheikh Musallim
bin Said, whose family owns this well, will show us the
way. With a couple of gerbers (goat skins used for water
storage) in hand, we stand inside the first chamber, which
could accommodate about 5 people huddled tightly in a circle.
The tattered ropes hang past the rock lip at our feet leading
us deep into the earth...
